Description
Truffle hunting in Piedmont from Turin begins in the city, where you meet your guide and drive out to the countryside. After a coffee stop and an introduction to truffle traditions, the real work starts in the woods.
You walk about three hours off the trail, led by seasoned truffle hunters with their trained dogs. You pick up how to recognise the clues, follow the dogs as they sniff around and hear about the types of truffle, how they grow and how to gather them sustainably. The ground is natural and can be demanding, and nobody can promise a find, which is part of the authenticity.
What you might look for depends on the season:
- black truffles of summer
- the sought-after white ones
- winter varieties
- spring bianchetto
Hunting usually pauses in May and September. Afterwards lunch is served at a local trattoria, Piedmontese cooking with regional wines. If the hunt went well, the fresh truffles end up in the dishes, and vegetarian options are available. You can buy fresh truffles too, if there are any to sell. The day lasts about seven hours in a small group, with guides speaking English, German, Turkish and Italian. It is a good fit for food lovers and nature fans, but not for people with mobility problems.
