Description
The Superga cogwheel train and basilica tour trades the city centre for the hills that watch over Turin. A short transfer takes you to Sassi Station, where the Sassi–Superga rack railway, working since 1884, waits for you. The slow climb crosses woods and meadows, and every bend reveals a wider picture of the city: red roofs, tree-lined avenues and baroque domes with the Alps behind.
The line ends at the Basilica of Superga. King Vittorio Amedeo II vowed to build it if Turin survived the siege of 1706, and Juvarra drew the plans. It crowns the hill at 672 metres and is the resting place of the Savoy royal family.
Finish with the dome terrace, where a 360° panorama stretches over the Vercelli rice fields, the Monferrato hills and the Monte Rosa massif.
