Description

The monument to Ferdinand of Savoy, Duke of Genoa and brother of Victor Emmanuel II, was inaugurated with a solemn ceremony in June 1877.

The Duke of Genoa, depicted in the act of abandoning his steed collapsing to the ground due to a gunshot, led the siege of Peschiera in 1848 and distinguished himself for his valor in the unfortunate Battle of Bicocca in 1849, when with his Division he managed to force the Austrians into a sudden, albeit ephemeral, retreat. In 1850 he married Princess Elizabeth in Dresden; from their marriage was born Margherita, future Queen of Italy and wife of her cousin Umberto I. In 1855, the premature death of the Duke, at only 33 years of age, after months of agony, deeply moved the people of Turin, already struck by the death in the same year of his mother Maria Teresa and his sister-in-law Maria Adelaide. The numerous bereavements of the royal family were interpreted by some as portents of the extinction of the dynasty.
