Ten thousand screaming girls, arrived from half of Italy, and the streets of Porta Nuova blocked by fans outside the singers' hotel. It was April 28, 1995, and Take That were playing at the PalaStampa.
The arena in the Vallette district, near Juventus's stadium, had opened a few months earlier, on October 22, 1994, with a concert by Adriano Celentano. Turin had been waiting for a place like it for years.
There was nothing between the stadiums and the theaters: the old PalaRuffini was too small for rock stars' stages. Under the forty-meter dome came R.E.M., Metallica and Deep Purple, and Vasco Rossi just once.
In 2001, for the U2 concert at the Stadio delle Alpi, with every hotel full, the city turned it into a dormitory for two thousand fans. The arena, later renamed Mazda Palace and finally PalaTorino, closed in 2011.
